New Bedford – John Gonet, 86, died Monday, May 6, 2019 at St. Luke’s Hospital.  He was the husband of the late Sophie (Sobolewski) Gonet.
     Born in Fairhaven, the son of the late Alojzy and Helena (Janik) Gonet, he was a lifelong resident of Acushnet.  He attended OLPH School, and graduated from New Bedford Vocational High School.  He was employed as a manager at Standard Fasteners of New Bedford, wholesalers of fasteners for the boating industry.
     A devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, John was very active in his church community, having served as volunteer in assisting with its annual festivals and the cooking of its delicious Polish foods.
     He enjoyed woodworking and working in his yard, but most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
     John was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran during the Korean War, and a member of the Polish-American WW Veterans’ Association.
     Survivors include 2 sons, Michael J. Gonet of Acushnet, and Thomas J. Gonet and wife, Barbara of Fairhaven; and 3 grandchildren, Joshua Gonet and wife, Emily, Ethan Gonet and Kyleigh Gonet; and 1 brother, Joseph Gonet of New Bedford, along with many nieces and nephews.
     He was the brother of the late Marjan Gonet and Stephen Gonet.
     Visitation is 4 – 7 P.M., Sunday, May 12, 2019 at Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford.  Funeral at 9 A.M., Monday from the funeral home, with a Mass at 10 A.M. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.  Burial with military honors follows in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  For condolences, visit www.machnowskifuneral.com.
