New Bedford- Helen C. (Cholewa) Los, 95, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 12, 2017. She was the wife of the late Stanley W. Los. They were happily married for 62 years.

Born in Fall River, daughter of the late Piotr and Mary (Twarog) Cholewa, she lived in New Bedford most of her life. Mrs. Los graduated from Durfee High School in 1939. She was a communicant of our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and St. Hedwig Church. Mrs. Los was a homemaker.

Mrs. Los served as a nurse’s aide for 20 years at St. Luke’s and Brockton VA Hospitals. She was a charter member of Friends of Poland, as well as a member of PNA- Lodge #1667 (Polish National Alliance). She attended, with her late husband, several PNA National Conventions.Mrs. Los served as Vice President and President of PNA Council #81. She helped to coordinate the Polish American unit in the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament Parade for many years. In honor of her loyalty, dedication, and service to the Polish Community, Mrs. Los was awarded the Woman of the Year in 2006 by the Polish United Societies of Greater New Bedford. She was Membership Chairperson of St. Hedwig Seniors, and a member of St. James and MT. Carmel Senior Citizens. Also, Mrs. Los was a Girl Scout leader and assisted with the Sarmatia Folk Dance Group.

Mrs. Los was a skilled knitter and enjoyed crafts, which she loved to give away as gifts. She liked to cook, play cards, and dance to polka music. She enjoyed telling jokes and spending quality time with family and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Los enjoyed traveling and visited Poland several times.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathleen Los Waldron and one son, Paul R. Los and his wife, Debra, all of New Bedford; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Kenneth S. Los and sister of the late Antoinette Grehl, Stanley Cholewa, and Joseph Cholewa.

Visiting hours are 4 to 7 P.M. , Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd. New Bedford. Her funeral will be at 9 A.M., Thursday from the funeral home, with a Mass at 10 A.M. in OLPH Church.

Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.
