Music by The Piano Brothers

New Bedford - Roger Laurent Fernandes, 80, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Sacred Heart Nursing Home.  He was married for over 50 years to his beloved wife, Pauline (Villeneuve) Fernandes.  Born in Fairhaven, to the late Albano and Flora (Moquin) Fernandes, he lived most of his life in New Bedford.  He was employed by the Internal Revenue Service in Providence and Boston until his retirement.
Roger was extremely loving and proud of his only daughter, Nicole Jackman and her husband, Sean of Dartmouth, but his happiest smiles were reserved for his grandson, Roger.  He is also survived by his brother, George Fernandes of Acushnet, as well as his loving nieces, nephews and other friends.
Roger was a lovable teddy bear that family, friends, coworkers and several nurses and waitresses found hard to resist.  His jitterbug was only slightly less famous than his crooning of Sinatra or his recent favorite, "Hey Jude".  He loved big dogs but also a certain poodle named Kobi, a juicy porterhouse steak, Arnold Palmer, a matinee movie, Trivial Pursuit, ice cream, Brubeck, Oklahoma football and was even a closet Giants fan.  But most of all, he loved to watch his grandson play any sport, especially baseball.
The family would like to extend a most heartfelt thank you to the staff at Sacred Heart Nursing Home for his loving care, and would also like to thank the residents at Sacred Heart for making him comfortable in his new home.  He was proud to serve as Resident Council President.
There are no calling hours.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Friday, October 27, 2017 in St. Mary's Church, 343 Tarkiln Hill Rd., New Bedford.  Burial is private.  Memorial donations in his name may be made to Sacred Heart Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitative Care, 359 Summer St., New Bedford, MA 02740.
Arrangements are with Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford.

Just heard the news of Roger's passing, and was so saddened by the news. His obituary was a great testament to his personality and life. Gloria and I just loved him and George so much as kids. They were our first "boyfriends." I have so many fond memories of him at Christmas and especially New year's day, when the Fernandes family would get together. My dad and his brothers, the "5 Ferns" crooning to Frank Sinatra. GOD BLESS you all. May he rest in peace..

Sending much love and sympathy to Pauline, Nicole, Sean, Roger and of course Kolbie. His obituary was spot on, Roger was a man of few words but his presence was huge. We have been friends for 47 years and have many wonderful memories. Memorial Day Theme parties at Evie's and Bob's house. Dressing for Halloween. Surprise invitation for brunch at the Fernandes home in Briarwood. Most memorable was New Years Eve at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, ahh those were the days !!!! Remembering him always and his sly smile. Rest in peace our dear friend !!!! Love, Alice and Roger Bourgeois

Aunt Pauline, Nicole, Sean, and Roger,
No need to worry, God has it in control.
He really does know the grief you’re going through.
He knows it first hand, as He’s been there too.
We pray God pours upon you His amazing Grace and you’ll find comfort in his presence.
With Love, In Christ,
Suzette, Bob
and family.
