Rey will be missed by his 'shipmates' and instructors at NMI. Rey was a promising mariner whose future was bright, his life cut short by an unforeseeable storm. "May you sail peacefully to the heavens and your smile always shine down on those who loved you."

I was deeply saddened to hear about Reynaldo's passing. I was one of his fourth grade teachers. I remember him as a kind and generous boy who had an amazing spirit. When I learned of his passing, I dug through my boxes and found a card that he made me 13 years ago this very month. My own mother passed unexpectedly. His words were very touching and it meant so much to me that it has been saved for all these years.

The card read:

We will all miss your mother but she is in a better place in her new world. It was signed Yours truly, Reynaldo Pena and was decorated with many different colored hearts and a big rainbow that stretched from one end of the card to the other end.

There is nothing I could ever write to take away the pain of his loss for all who knew and loved him. But what I can say is that your son, friend, cousin, brother made a difference in my life. I ran into him a few times when he was in middle school. No matter who he was with, he always stopped to talk with me. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I am very sorry about Rey and my heart breaks for all of you. He will never be forgotten.
