Westport – Michael P. Coleman, 73, of Westport, passed away on February 17, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family, including his “little girl”, a Brittany named Logan, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
He was the husband of Josephine (“Phinie”) Coleman, with whom he shared 46 years of marriage, and who was his caretaker and companion throughout his illness.
Mr. Coleman was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and raised in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts.  He was the son of the late Philip L. Coleman, native of Gardner, Massachusetts, and Barbara (Phillips) Coleman, native of Michigan.
He was a graduate of Bishop Stang High School and went on to earn his BBA from Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts.
Michael enjoyed a long career as an insurance agent, beginning with the family-owned insurance agency, and later moving on to Lapointe Insurance Agency, in Westport.  He was well known throughout the community and was actively involved in many local organizations, including the Lions Club and Westport Business to Business, where he served as President for two years.  He was also a member of the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents and served as a Director of the Southcoast Insurance Agents Association.
Michael was an avid auto enthusiast, especially loving older, antique models, and would rarely miss the Father’s Day auto show at Portsmouth Abbey School.  He also loved to spend time outside, whether puttering around the yard, walking his dog Logan, running at Horseneck Beach, or canoeing up and down the Westport River.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Michael P. Coleman II, of Westport; sister, Beth Coleman and her husband, Peter Mellalieu of New Zealand; niece, Kate Walkinshaw and her husband, Patrick of Maryland; cousin, Nancy Weststrate and husband, Jack of New Hampshire; cousin, Peter Coleman of Florida; and brother-in-law, Anthony Costa of Plymouth.
Michael was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Cogswell of Michigan, and brother-in-law, Raymond Costa of Fall River.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Church in Westport on February 29, 2020 at 11 A.M.  Burial to be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Dear Mike Jr and Phinie,

My deepest condolences on the sad departure of my brother-in-law. I have fond memories of our times together since I first met your family with my Bethie almost two decade's ago. I also recall some wonderful Thanksgivings at your home.

I frequently see classic Ameri-car-nae hereabouts in West Auckland, New Zealand. So I'll often remember Mike Sr and imagine him driving his favourite chariot somewhere above.

With my love,

Kiwi Pete

As a friend of Michael's sister, Barbara (Button), I had the pleasure of meeting him when he was here in Michigan, and we enjoyed exchanging emails. Michael left this life much too soon, but I'm sure that Barbara was there in heaven to greet him with open arms. My deepest sympathy to Beth and the entire Coleman family.
With love,

Elizabeth B Coleman
