Andre Joseph Champagne, 87 Obituary
New Bedford - Andre Joseph Champagne, 87, a resident of Sacred Heart Nursing Home, joined his beloved wife of 55 years, the late Irene Anita (Carrier) Champagne to be with our Lord, Sunday, May 10, 2015.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Hedwidge (Gagnon) Champagne and Philippe Deneri Champagne. He served in the U.S. Army as a cartographer during the Korean War.
Andre graduated from Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School in 1946. He was a musician, artist, craftsman and a perfectionist. Andre regularly entertained the family, playing the piano and his violin. A strong swimmer, he also enjoyed dancing and conversation with his favorite greeting, "What's up, Doc?"
Andre was a gentle family man. He was a book collector and amateur astronomer. Andre was a carpenter, mason, machinist and sewing machine mechanic before starting his own business with his wife, Irene in 1959.
He was a member of the VFW Poirier Post. A deeply religious man, he was a communicant of St. Joseph - St. Therese Church.
Andre was a descendant of Charles I Orillon dit Champagne of LaFleche, France and Canadian pioneer, Charles II Orillon dit Champagne of Nicolet, Quebec.
Survivors include a son, Marc Champagne of Acushnet; 4 daughters, Michele Champagne, Christine Caldas and Valerie Champagne, all of New Bedford, and Paulette Adams of Assonet; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the brother of the late Albert, Ludger and Roger Champagne, Germaine Desmarais and Aldea Blanchard.
Visiting hours are Sunday, May 17 from 4 - 8 P.M. His funeral will be at 9 A.M., Monday, from the funeral home followed by a funeral Mass at 10 A.M., in St. Joseph - St. Therese Church. Burial with military honors will be in MA National Cemetery, Bourne.
