Antonio C. Canals

New Bedford – Antonio C. Canals, born March 5, 1948, the son of the late Antonio and Iladir (Nascimento) Canals, died Saturday, April 1, 2023 at The Oaks after a brief illness.

Born in Almenara, MG, Brazil before moving to New Bedford, MA, Antonio enjoyed being a hardworking man. Every morning, he would wake up and go for a walk. He would do so again before dinner, with each walk lasting about an hour. He also loved doing work around his house in which he was the landlord. Antonio loved decorating the yard with chairs, tables, umbrellas and flowers on the stairs. He took pride in his property. He also loved soccer, as he would cheer for Brazil with pride. Antonio was a great man who loved his friends and family. He would always give the children presents and everything that could make them happy. He loved being the uncle. He was proof that you didn’t have to have the same blood to be considered family. Antonio will be sorely missed by everyone that he was around.

Antonio is survived by his 1 brother and 2 sisters in Brazil; his niece, Loyana Romanholi of Weymouth, MA; and his best friends who took care of him, Odete Couto, Shay Couto, Kevin Couto, John Couto, and David Couto of New Bedford, MA and Patricia Metil of Freetown, MA.

Private cremation services are with Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. Burial will be in Brazil.
