Bernice Fields, 95, passed away unexpectedly on August 14, 2024 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in New Bedford to Elsie (Grace) Fields on April 29, 1929, she lived in the area for most of her life. Bernice attended New Bedford Public schools and King’s County Hospital School of Nursing in New York. After graduating, she accepted a position with King’s County Hospital in Brooklyn where she stayed for several years. She later worked in Detroit for a short period of time before returning to Massachusetts to work for a drug treatment center. Afterwards, Bernice obtained a position as a registered nurse with the VA hospital in Brockton until her retirement from the Veteran’s Administration.
Bernice loved spending time with family and friends. She never had children, but her niece Kelly was like her daughter, and Kelly's sons Doug, Justice, and Nate were like her grandchildren. She loved and adored them, and they brought her great joy. Bernice also loved going to church and was named mother of the church, which was a great honor to her. In her free time, she also enjoyed gardening, reading, doing crossword puzzles, traveling, going out to eat, and sitting at the beach.
In addition to Kelly, Doug, Justice, and Nate, Bernice leaves behind Doug's wife, Jolyn (Zyianna); her niece, Dawn (Vincent & Vienna); her goddaughter, Shirley; her special nephews, William, Tommy, Neil, Joshua, and Tony; her nieces and nephews, Linda, Joanie, Joey, Michael, and Laurie Ann; her sister, Doris in New York; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She is predeceased by her aunt Blanche; her sister, June; her brother, Carlton; and her sister, Dawn, who died in infancy.
In accordance with her wishes, Bernice did not want a wake or funeral. Her memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are with Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford.
