New Bedford - Clara Jean (Pengilly) Kalisz, 94, died Sunday, October 29, 2023 in the arms of her loving daughter, Katherine. She was the wife of the late Eugene (Gene) Kalisz to whom she was married for 62 years. She was the daughter of the late Elmo C. and Viola E. (Chase) Pengilly, and was a lifelong resident of New Bedford.
Jean attended New Bedford High School. She worked at the John I. Paulding Company where she met her future husband who fell in love with her at first sight. She also worked at The Star Store and later at Alberox Corporation in the New Bedford Industrial Park as an inspector of medical devices until her retirement. She was a loving mother and homemaker.
She is survived by her daughter, Katherine Kalisz of New Bedford. She is also survived by her sister, Fay (Pengilly) Harding of South Dartmouth; nieces Tracy (Harding) Schofield and her husband Paul, and Jennifer Harding. She is also survived by members of the Kalisz family, including nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Clara’s daughter is grateful for the care provided by all the staff of Southcoast Visiting Nurses, in particular Sean, her nurse and Maria, her CNA for their loving care.
Arrangements are with Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. A wake will be conducted Thursday, November 2, 2023 from 9:00-10:30 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 A.M. at the Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 121 Mt. Pleasant St., New Bedford. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery II on Mt. Pleasant St., New Bedford.
