New Bedford - George Abreu, a life-time resident of New Bedford, 77, passed away Monday, November 26, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of the late Barbara M. (Zak-Johnson) Abreu to whom he was married for 50 years.
Born in New Bedford, he was the loving son of the late John Edward and Mary Dolores (Quintal) Abreu. George was a graduate of New Bedford High School. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
George owned and operated Abreu's Auto Body Shop for 30 years. He was a lifetime member of Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento, Inc.
He is survived by a son, George Philip Abreu, whom he dearly loved; 2 sisters, Nazare Abreu and Philomena Taber and her husband, Ernest; a brother, Edward Abreu; a niece, Elizabeth M. Taber and a nephew/godchild, Anthony E. Taber.
Visitation is 4 - 6 P.M., Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Thursday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
