North Carolina - Henry Galary, 86, died Thursday, June 9, 2016 at University of Chapel Hill Hospital, NC.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Franz Joseph and Victoria (Wojtowicz) Galary, Henry was a former resident of the city. A 1947 graduate of New Bedford High School, Henry earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1957 in Textile Engineering from the New Bedford Institute of Technology known now as University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He was a member of the Phi Psi Fraternity and served his country as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corp. He also earned a degree in wine knowledge from the Wine Institute. As the textile industry moved south, so did Henry. He worked as a supervisor in textiles in Rock Hill, SC before moving to Siler City, NC to work as a textile engineer in the lab as a supervisor at Hadley Peoples Mfg. CO., from where he retired.
Henry was a community-spirited man who thrived working behind the scenes. He was a member of the American Legion Post 81, Liberty and a member of Randolph County 40/8. He held the position of Warden with Knights of Columbus and was also a member of the Moose's. Henry enjoyed serving his church and was very active at St. Julia Catholic Church in Siler City, holding the positions of Team Member with counting group which tabulated offertory and misc. funds for parish , Mass Usher, long standing member of Parish Council, chairperson for Community Life and always willing to help wherever needed. He volunteered his time delivering Meals on Wheels, being an AARP Treasurer of his group, active with the Council on Aging, Chatham County, NC and helping out in "Relay for Life" events.
Henry was a loyal sports fan and loved cheering on the New England and North Carolina teams, whether they were professional or college. He enjoyed supporting and rooting the USA and Poland in all the Olympics. His passion was a fix it man and loved the challenge of repairing items. When Henry visited family in Massuchusetts there would be items set aside awaiting his expertise to repair. He enjoyed traveling in the US and abroad. He was fond of crabbing, camping, the ocean, and keeping his eye on the daily stock reports. He had a passion to always watch PBS News Hour and the Nightly Business Report. In his younger days he loved to dabble in cooking. It was said that he made a "real mean" pizza from scratch. He had a sweet tooth for New England favorites of pebble candy and penuche fudge. He loved an occasional good glass of Sherry or Rock and Rye. Most of all, he loved his family. The outstanding quality of Henry's nature was often commented as "He's a real nice guy." Henry had a rare gift of always making you laugh. He was quite a comedian.
Survivors include his sisters, Helen (Galary, Pietraszek) Smith of Florida, formerly of Acushnet, MA and Lucy (Galary) Talbot of New York, formerly of New Bedford, MA, 20 nieces and nephews from Bridgewater, Fairhaven, Fall River, New Bedford, North Dartmouth, Massachusetts as well as Connecticut, Florida, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington and many great nieces and nephews and close friends in Massachusetts and North Carolina. He was the brother of the late Walter, John, Edward, Peter Galary and Frances (Galary) Canto and uncle of 2 deceased nephews from Massachusetts and Mississippi.
Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford is handling all arrangements. There will be no wake. His funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 7, at 10:45 A.M. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 235 N. Front St., New Bedford. Burial with military honors at Veterans Cemetery, Bourne, MA will follow.
A Mass intention dedicated to the memory of Henry will also be held at St. Julia Catholic Church, 210 Harold Hart Rd., Siler City, NC on July 10, 2016 at 10 A.M. by the Galary family.
