New Bedford - Irena G. (Gula) Kalisz, 88, died Thursday, March 15, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness in the arms of her children. She was the wife of the late Frederick M. Kalisz to whom she was married for 49 years. Irena was the daughter of the late Stanislaw and Apolonia (Jagiello) Gula and was a lifelong resident of New Bedford.
Irena was a graduate of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Holy Family High School and the predecessor to the Kinyon Campbell Business School. She was the executive secretary at the former Avery Process Company of New Bedford prior to her marriage and transition to full time homemaker and mother.
Irena, a loving wife and mom, was dedicated to her husband and family and took great pride in the many accomplishments of her husband, children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
In her youth, she participated in many theatrical and musical Polish ethnic organizations. She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and participated in many church societies and projects. Irena was the head majorette for the Kolko Polek Marching Band. She was a member of the Polish American World War Veteran Women's Auxiliary.
She is survived by her three children: Dr. Frederick M. Kalisz, Jr., former mayor of New Bedford and wife, Patricia of New Bedford; Christine-Ann McIntyre and husband, Atty. Joseph B. McIntyre of New Bedford; and Michael S. Kalisz and wife, Marlene of Acushnet; 6 grandchildren: Paul A. DeCouto, Jr., Kali Knight and husband, Adam, Michael S. Kalisz, Jr., Christopher J. McIntyre, Frederick M. Kalisz, III, and Victoria Mae Kalisz; 3 great granddaughters, Lila, Faith and Jovie Knight.
She is survived by her sister, Stephanie Wisz of Hartford, CT. She was predeceased by her sister, Genowefa and brothers, Zbigniew, Adolph, Boleslaw and Ferdinand. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their spouses and children, extended family and friends.
Arrangements are with Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. A wake will be conducted Sunday, March 18, 2018 from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, March 19, 2018 at 11 A.M. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 235 North Front St., New Bedford. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery II on Mt. Pleasant St., New Bedford.
