New Bedford – Joseph Gonet, 95, died Friday, December 22, 2023. He was the husband of the late Flora (Michalski) Gonet.
Born in Korczyna, Poland, the son of the late Alojzy and Helena (Janik) Gonet, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life. A devout Catholic, Joseph was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish where he volunteered for all church activities and was director of the CCD program for over 20 years. Additionally, Joseph was a Sergeant 1st Class with the U.S. National Guard for 8 years, a real estate broker and the groundskeeper for Bay State Girls Softball.
In his free time, Joseph enjoyed playing harmonica, gardening and being a children’s storyteller. He was also a lifetime cobbler/shoemaker and a season ticket holder for Boston College football for 25 years. Most of all, Joseph was the biggest fan of his son’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, and loved to attend everything from T-Ball, softball, football, basketball and baseball games to gymnastics, cheerleading and bodybuilding competitions.
He is survived by his 2 sons, Richard Gonet and his wife, Mary Beth, and John Gonet and his wife, Annemarie; his daughters-in-law, Grace Gonet and Cynthia Gonet; 8 grandchildren, John Gonet, Jennifer Carloni, Lisa Egnitz, Diane Machado, Donna Kulig, Susan Gonet, Melissa Gonet and Marc Lima; and 15 great-grandchildren.
