Mitchell "Barney" Pielech Obituary

Mitchell "Barney" Stanley Pielech of New Bedford, died peacefully on April 24th, at the Edith Norse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, MA. He was the husband of the late Irene Ann (Bralewski) Pielech.

A lifelong resident of New Bedford until 2019, Barney was the son of the late Michael and Mary (Napieracz) Pielech, and the brother of the late Helen, Stanley and Josephine Pielech and the late Stasia Brule.

He is survived by his son, Mitchell and his wife Deborah; 2 granddaughters, Kelly Irene and Kristin Ann; 4 great-grandchildren, Camryn Rose, Isabella Lucy, Landon Mitchell and Luca Enzo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Barney was educated In Our Lady of Perpetual Help Polish School and the New Bedford school system. After graduating from New Bedford Vocational High School, during the post-World War II era, he enlisted in the Army where he logged 2 separate tours of duty, one overseas in Italy.

Barney returned to New Bedford where he married the love of his life, Irene, in 1952. Being the youngest siblings in both of their families, they spent many happy years enjoying their ever-growing families and in 1957 they welcomed their only child into the world. Barney and Irene enjoyed traveling, playing games of chance and working on their home. Some of their vacations were spent close to home and family while others took them to get-away places like Florida, Bermuda, Las Vegas and Montreal. Sadly, Irene passed at a young age, but they did enjoy almost 28 years of marriage; which Included a Silver Wedding Anniversary party with their closest family and friends in 1977.

During his work life, Barney spent many years as a Machinist for the Morse Twist Drill Company and the bulk of his career as a Building Maintenance Craftsman for the City of New Bedford Parks Department, where he remained until his retirement in 1992.

In retirement, Barney continued limited travel, focusing on his granddaughters Kelly and Kristin. Barney was the best Dziadzio (grandfather in Polish). His love and generosity toward them knew no bounds and he enjoyed watching them grow into exceptional women starting their own families. Dziadzio's reach extended to other family members as well, where he was known as "Grandpa Barney” to Patrick, Kimberlee, Joseph, Courtney and Jacob.

Barney remained in New Bedford until 2019, when he decided to move to Wilmington, MA to be closer to his growing family. That move allowed him to experience the births of his 4 great-grandchildren, Camryn, Bella, Landon and Luca. He considered himself truly blessed to be able to experience these and other family events in person over the last four years,

Barney, Dziadzlo, will be greatly missed by his family, but his memory will live on in their hearts forever.
