New Bedford - Philip N. Cox, 61, of Northampton, MA, died Sunday, April 24, 2016, at home. He was the lifelong companion of Reyes Lazaro.
Born in Amarillo, TX, the son of Cleo (McMahon) Cox and the late Rev. Jack Cox, he lived in Northampton for 35 years. A devoted teacher, he was a professor of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and an activist and scholar. He taught courses in Ethics, Bioethics, Law, Philosophy of Religion and Political Philosophy. He was a Union Grievance Officer for the Faculty Federation. He loved Shakespeare and music, especially Bob Dylan. He also loved to work out at the gym, take long walks in the woods and go to beaches along the ocean.
Survivors include his lifelong companion, Reyes Lazaro of Northampton, MA; his mother, Cleo Cox of Austin, TX; and his brother, Steve Cox of Lincoln, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
A gathering in Philip's memory will be held at 2 P.M., on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at UMass Dartmouth at the library, Grand Reading Room.
In lieu of flowers, charitable gifts may be made to The UMass-Dartmouth Foundation/Phil Cox Philosophy Scholarship Fund, 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA 02747. The scholarship will support UMass-Dartmouth students on the basis of need.
