September 2, 1947 – June 26, 2023
Steven Hunt, 75, of Fairhaven, loving husband of Joanna (Sobolewski) Hunt, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2023, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family. Steven was born in Boston on September 2, 1947, son of the late Stewart and Lillian (Stremlau) Hunt.
Besides his wife Joanna, Steven is survived by his three beloved children; Stewart (and partner Mandy), Allison (and partner Barry), and Jeremy (and fiancé Holly); grandson; Wesley; and his best friend who was like a brother; Stewart Mills. After graduating from Dartmouth High School in 1965, Steven honorably served as a yeoman in the U.S. Navy stationed in Long Beach, California from 1967 to 1970. He was also a proud member of the U.S. Coast Guard-Auxiliary in Fairhaven for 39 years.
Throughout his life, Steven ran a fish & tackle shop; operated fishing charters from his boat, Bulldog; and worked at K-Mart, Walmart, and Acushnet Electric stores. He was a distinguished fisherman and bowler. Steven took home first place honors in the Martha’s Vineyard Fishing Derby tournament and once reeled in a career best 60-pound striped bass. In 1970, he became the first bowler in Southcoast Massachusetts to roll a perfect 300 game.
Steven will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his boisterous laugh and personality. He loved animals, especially his two golden retrievers, Hunter and Kramer, and was an avid sports fan and a Seinfeld superfan fluent in the words of Cosmo Kramer and George Costanza.
Visiting hours are Sunday, July 2, 2023 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. His funeral service will be Monday, July 3, 2023 at 11:30 A.M. from the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at South Dartmouth Cemetery.
