New Bedford - Suzanne R. (Roberts) Boffa died Thursday, February 9, 2017 in her home with family beside her. Born September 13, 1918 in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Darien, CT, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Mercedes R. (Mendez) Roberts. Suzanne was the widow of William L. Boffa, Sr.
She was the mother of John Boffa (deceased), Sister Eileen Boffa, RSM, (Stephanie) and William L. Boffa, Jr. She was the sister of Elizabeth Ochenrider and the late Lucille Massey; and is also survived by 4 nieces.
Over 30 years, Suzanne resided in New Bedford. In her home, she started a prayer group among friends that lasted over 12 years. She was a daily communicant at her church of St. Mary Church in New Bedford. Suzanne was a lover of all things beautiful; delighting in the seasons, the ocean, trees and flowers, and enjoying the many squirrels and birds in her yard.
Through the 1940's, Mom and Dad adopted three little kids at the New York Foundling Hospital in New York City and brought them home to Rowayton, CT. Together, they gave us: Jack, Stephanie and Bill, the most wonderful childhood anyone could ask for. We were loved and treasured, taught family values, and the tremendous importance of our faith.
Mom was totally dedicated to her vocation as a mother. She at times could be a real Momma Bear, protecting us and other times, oh! So much fun, too! Days at the beach were almost daily in the summer with sleigh rides in the winter. She was very social, loved jokes and surprising us. April Fool's Day was always well planned each year. In prayer, Padre Pio and the Rosary were among her favorite devotions.
Through the years, people who knew our Mom, would always remark how very beautiful she was, and we knew they meant inside as well as outside.
With her deep faith, she embraced life with its challenges, kept God at the center of her life who truly gave her a steadfast heart. We are graced to have had her as our Mother. We are blessed that she had "picked us out" those many years ago.
Visiting hours are 2 - 5 P.M., Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Machnowski Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. Her funeral will be at 8:30 A.M. Monday, from the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 9:30 A.M. in St. Mary Church, New Bedford. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
